The photographic series produced by Valérie Belin are based on a very precise protocol, with results that are both spectacular and austere. Their projections or narrative interpretations and yet, paradoxically, their intense presence is accompanied by a disturbing sense of uncertainty.
What exactly are we seeing here? Are these subjects alive or inanimate? Are they the thing itself or a double, an original or an imitation? And, more generally, how exactly are we to define life in the age of general cloning? How is it inflected by instability, metamorphosis and the power of simulacra?
